Winter sunshine at Sjøbadet park, Moss in Norway

Winter sunshine at the canal park Sjøbadet in Moss, Norway, early afternoon on 12th January 2013. In the park it`s a statue of The Norwegian Lady looking across the Atlantic in the direction of her sister, who stands in the same posture on Virginia Beach, USA. Next to the statue you will find Sjøbadet, a beach situated practically in the town centre.

The statue became a solid bond between Virginia Beach and Moss (sister cities). Every year since 1962, at the time of the anniversary of the shipwreck of the Dictator a memorial service takes place at the Norwegian Lady in Virginia Beach, when flowers are placed by the statue.

Sjøbadet is located by the ferries, Bastøfergene, and the Kanalen. On two of the photos in the photo album you can watch the The Norwegian Lady admiring the beautiful sunshine over the fjord.

The story of «The Norwegian Lady»
The Norwegian Lady stands on the beach in Moss, and her twin sister on the Atlantic coast in Virginia Beach, as a memorial oj a tragic shipwreck in the year 1891, and at the same time as a symbol of the friendship between the two sister cities. The bark Dictator, registered in Moss, in March 1891 was on her way from Pensacola, Florida, to England with a cargo of lumber.......Read the full story here.

Moss is situated on the eastern shores of the Oslofjord, 40 miles south of Oslo. Its offers great opportunities for outdoor adventure, especially on the ydillic island Jeløya. This island has been shaped by vulcanic eruptions. At 19 km², Jeløya is the largest island in the Oslofjord. Geologically, Jeløya is largely made up of a young lava rock-type from the Permian period.

The population in Moss county is over 30.000. The area 25 square miles. Moss became a town in 1720, but had been an important place for sawmills, lumber export, and shipping from the 16th century. The town has a variety of important industries and is a regional center for shopping and education. Moss is famous for its art galleries and for its many sculptures.
