2007-09-01
The New 7 Wonders of the World have been announced during the Official Declaration ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal, on Saturday, 7 July 2007 by The New7Wonders Foundation. Finally the Great Pyramids of Egypt got some amazing company. The new wonders are much younger, but also very interesting. The Great Wall of China won the vote.

The New7Wonders Foundation, which is behind the New7Wonders campaigns, has the express aim of undertaking documentation and conservation works of monuments worldwide under the motto: our heritage is our future!

Based on a press release from New7Wonders Foundation, the organisation wrote: Over 100 million votes tallied in the first-ever global election Zurich/Switzerland, July 7, 2007.

In front of a crowd of some 50,000 spectators and a television audience of millions, the results of the New7Wonders campaign were announced in Lisbon’s Benfica Stadium this evening.

In the random order in which they were announced by hosts Bipasha Basu, Hilary Swank and Ben Kingsley, the New 7 Wonders of the World, as chosen by the people of the world, are:

  • The Great Wall of China
  • Petra
  • The Statue of Christ Redeemer
  • Machu Picchu
  • Chichén Itzá
  • The Colosseum
  • The Taj Mahal

New7Wonders Foundation President and Founder Bernard Weber and Amir Dossal, Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Partnerships, presented plaques to all finalists.

The star-studded ceremony featured international personalities including New7Wonders Panel of Experts and former Director-General of UNESCO Prof. Federico Mayor, Neil Armstrong, José Carreras, Joaquín Cortés, Chaka Khan, Jennifer Lopez, Bertrand Piccard, Dulce Pontes, Cristiano Ronaldo and Alessandro Safina. It was choreographed by Olympic ceremony veteran Jacques Lemay.

The event was officially hosted by the President and Prime Minister of Portugal, with ministers, ambassadors and other representatives of the finalists in attendance.

An unprecedented global movement has united people everywhere
Through the New7Wonders campaign, millions of the world’s citizens, from the four corners of the globe, of all races, religions and ages, have overwhelmingly shown their enthusiasm for global dialogue. This unprecedented outpouring of support has propelled our world’s heritage onto the front pages and headlines of the international media and fostered intercultural
appreciation on a completely new, democratic level.

Global memory has been created for the very first time
Founder and President of the New7Wonders Foundation Bernard Weber noted that, “The people of the world have created global memory—7 things that everyone will remember.”

The New7Wonders of Nature
To close the ceremony, Bernard Weber announced the Foundation’s next campaign, the New7Wonders of Nature, which will build on the phenomenal momentum of the first-ever global
election and lift our natural heritage to the same level as that created by humans.
