2008-01-16

Svalbard`s exhibition at the Norway International Meeting and Travel Fair 2008 was mostly associated with the unique landsape on Svalbard. In the untouched arctic wilderness there, adventurers can also admire the breathtaking scenery with snow-capped volcanoes, tranquil fjords, and rising sea cliffs.

Svalbard is one of the world’s last frontiers located in northern part of the Norway. Around 60% of Svalbard’s land-mass is covered by small and large glaciers. Svalbard consists of several islands, which are laying halfway between Norway and The North Pole.

There are several opportunities for tours on Svalbard. Tour operators on offer short and long dog sledding trips in the winters, overnight trips to huts in the wilderness and trips with accommodation in tent. Svalbard can also be experienced by kayak where it’s possible to observe seals.

Especially in the period from December to May, there are great opportunities for dog sledding, snowmobiles and skiing.

In the summer travellers can go by dog sledding on wheels, and take walking daytrips to mountains and glaciers.

Svalbard is full of opportunities for winter extreme sport, observing the northern light, dog sledging, and has well developed infrastructure for winter sport, snow- and ice festivals.

Now a days travellers can encounter polar bears, so they need to be careful. Another thing that makes Svalbard especially interesting is discovery of remains of the world biggest reptile in 2006. There is no doubt: Svalbard is for genuine adventurers.

Additional information
The 150 million year-old remains of the 10-meter (33-foot) long ocean going predator were found on the remote Svalbard in August 2006. According to researchers from The University of Oslo's Natural History Museum they discovered the remains of a short-necked plesiosaur, a prehistoric marine reptile. It is believe to be the first complete plesiosaur skeleton ever found. The remains of a prehistoric reptile was described "as long as a bus, with teeth larger than cucumbers ... in a head that could swallow an adult human whole."
