Dubrovnik, often referred to as the "Pearl of the Adriatic," is a city rich in history and ancient wonders. Situated on the Dalmatian coast, became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programme co-ordinated by UNESCO.

Here are some of the remarkable ancient wonders in the old town of Dubrovnik:

  • The historic Old Town of Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture. Walking through its narrow streets, you'll encounter ancient churches, palaces, and monuments dating back centuries.
  • One of the most iconic features of Dubrovnik is its ancient city walls, which date back to the 10th century. These walls surround the old town and are remarkably well-preserved, offering stunning views of the city and the Adriatic Sea.
  • Dubrovnik Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This stunning Baroque cathedral was originally built in the 12th century and has undergone several reconstructions over the centuries. It houses many valuable works of art, including paintings by famous Italian artists.

There are also several other interesting places to experience as Rector's Palace, Sponza Palace, Franciscan Monastery and Pharmacy and outside the city walls is Fort Lovrijenac. This is built on a rocky cliff overlooking the Adriatic Sea, it offers spectacular views of the city and has played a significant role in Dubrovnik's defense throughout history. Many scenes from the TV series The Game of the Throne were filmed in Dubrovnik (for information about the sites where the scenes were filmed - Croatia Holidays).

These ancient wonders, along with Dubrovnik's picturesque setting and rich cultural heritage, make it a truly enchanting destination for history enthusiasts and travelers alike.
