The Blue Lagoon is located 25 minutes by bus from the airport Keflavik and 40 minutes from the capital Reykjavik. It is Iceland's most popular bathing attraction and reflects much of the inhabitants' culture and spirit. The lagoon is a pool of natural, mineral-rich geothermal water. The pool`s size is like a football pitch, and the deepest point is 1,5 metres.

After I had taking a shower inside, I went out in the cold. The pool was just 10 metres away from the wardrobe. I smelt the stinking "svovel" smog from the water. My nose holes (sinus) started to vibrate. It nearly took my breath away, but after a while I started to get used to it. So I felt an ice-cold breeze from the lava desert in the north. I nearly froze my ass off. The wind was howling against me like a hungry wolf. I really looked forward to jump out in to the hot water. So I hurried out in the water.
The Blue Lagoon was opened in 1999. The lagoon is located near the old bathing pool and a power station. The lagoon is a pool built by humans to collect drainage water from the power station. The power station pumps the up extreme hot salt water from 2000 metres deep. Then this water is pumped out in the public pipe system, which is used to provide heat to private houses. When the water has provided the heat, it cools down and becomes pumped out in the lagoon.
Photo. The Blue lagoon - people enjoy themselves very much.
In Island the inhabitants call hot springs for "Heitar Pottir", and they enjoy bathing in these springs independent of the weather condition. Snow around in the area doesn't frighten the local people from bathing. Many people also like to bath in icy water. The Icelandic people are really though. Of course they are: they have Viking blood in their vanes.
When I took my first step out in the water, it was a real relief since I was so cold. The water temperature is 36 - 39 degrees year around, so it was a quite contrast to the temperature above the surface. Down in the water I felt immediately comfortably warm.
There were people almost over all in the pool. The water is full of minerals and algae. The sight under the water was totally unclear. It was impossible to see your own toe and the bottom. The name is derived from the colour of the water. It contains salts, Silika and blue green algae. It is not necessary to be able to swim. Most people are walking around with their head little bit over the surface, but I used the opportunity to swim around for a while. Suddenly I noticed that I was completely alone. It became totally silent except from the wind.

The wind blew harder and the fog became tighter. Towards me it was coming a "white wall" that make the view shortened. It looked little bit scary, but it was nothing to worry about.
Magic power
Do the water in the Blue Lagoon cure? Has it healing properties? As mentioned the water is full of minerals and algae. It is hard to believe that this water has magic heeling power. It is said to be good for people who suffer from skin diseases as for example psoriasis. It is also give you a soft body and make you feel relaxed. For they who want massage out in the water, it is possible to order this at the office.

I put white Silica in my face to cleanse and make the skin extra soft. For they who have been in Creek, the smell of the svovel from the water probably can remind you about the drink Ozo. I like Ozo very much, but this smelled too strong. After 40 minutes it was enough for me. I felt good. I felt like I was reborn.

So it was time for the big reward: cold drinks in the cafeteria! I summarized my experience in "the unique wonder of nature", but soon I prepared myself for the Viking feast later in the evening.
