Great cycling tour in the traces of Mozart in Austria

2004-03-17
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart left many traces in and round Salzburg. A mosaic of historically substantiated "Mozart points" in Austria and Bavaria are now linked via the beautiful 450 kilometres Mozart cycling trail. The trial makes a perfect day out for active culture and nature lovers.

This trail opened last summer (2003). In an beautiful scenery it's possible to experience some of the sites which are connected to the famous Austrian musician Mozart. It goes through the SalzburgerLand (Austria), Bayern (Germany ) and Tyrolean.

On the route there are signposts with the Mozart head on. You find the signs in both directions, but it's recommended to cycle towards the sun. The tour starts from Salzburg, also called the City of Mozart. Read more about it on www.salzburg.com/tourismus_e/

In Salzburg you can visit the house were Mozart was born and lived. The cycling trail leads in the beginning past Maria Plain pilgrimage church where Mozart's "Coronation Mass" was performed in 1779.

Next possible stop along the cycling path is St. Gilgen, the town where Mozart's mother was born and his sister "Nannerl" got married. And so on where you can find other places connected to the great Austrian composer and musican.

The Austrian part of the route leads past Oberndorf with the "Quite-Night-Chapel. At Laufen in Germany you can cycle trough a sea landscape with the monastery Seeon, which Mozart often visited and here he also composed. The tour is easy to cycle. It's just between InnValley and Salzburg that it's a high difference in the altitude. Don`t forget to check the brakes on your bikecycle before you drive down the steep hills. But anyway take the altitude as an challenge. The the beautiful view will encourage you up the steep trails.

Some facts about the tour:

·        Start: Salzburg (circuit!)

·        Length: 450 km

·        Vertical drop: difference in altitude: 1400m

·        Trail: 90% cycling trails and low-traffic side roads; mostly asphalted. Connecting trails between St. Lorenz and Köstendorf, Laufen and Kössen, Bad Reichenhall and Salzburg.

·        Signs: The Mozart cycling trail is signposted with Mozart symbols throughout.

·        Tip: Lake District and along the Inn River, both well suited for families.

Good luck with the tour. This must be an adventure for life!
