Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, Munich - Dark secret from past

Hofbräuhaus am Platzl,Munich,Germany

Always fullpacked. You can immediately feel the energy and joy here. Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, Munich - the place for beer, music and socialising. Just take a step inside and you will be lifted up to great hights. This beer hall has also a dark secret from past: Hitler used to make speeches here to Nazi supporters.

It was good to sit down here sipping my beer and talking to nice people. When you enter the beer hall, you’d never suspect it’s dark past. In 1919, the Munich Communist government set up headquarters in the beer hall, and in February 1920 Adolf Hitler and the National Socialists held their first meeting in the Festsaal, the Festival Room, on the third floor.

The Hofbräuhaus has a rich history and has played a role in various historical events. It was originally established in 1589 by Duke Wilhelm V as the royal brewery of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Over the centuries, it became a focal point for Munich's cultural and social life.

In February 1920, Hitler and the National Socialists held their very first meeting at Hofbrauhaus in Munich. During this gathering, Hitler presented the Nazi Party ‘Twenty Five Point Program’ (a political manifesto outlining the party’s philosophy and mission) in the Festival Room.

Hofbrauhaus is also where Hiltler publicly denounced the Jews and gave his infamous “Why We Are Antisemites” speech. In fact, Hofbrauhaus played a such central role in Hilter’s rise to power that they would celebrate the founding of the Nazi party here every year on it’s anniversary.

Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is a historic beer hall in Munich, Germany, and has a rich history that dates back to the 16th century. Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party used the Hofbräuhaus for political purposes during the early 1920s.

On February 24, 1920, Adolf Hitler and other members of the Nazi Party held a meeting in the Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, where they adopted the "25 Points," which outlined the party's basic beliefs and goals. This event is considered one of the early milestones in the rise of the Nazi Party. Hitler gave his first major public speech at the Hofbräuhaus, and the location was used for Nazi rallies and gatherings in the early days of the party's existence.

While the Hofbräuhaus itself is not responsible for Hitler's actions or beliefs, it played a role in the history of the Nazi Party as a venue for some of its early political activities. The beer hall has since distanced itself from its association with the Nazi Party, and today it is primarily known as a popular tourist destination where visitors can enjoy traditional Bavarian food, beer, and culture.

It's important to recognize this historical context and the complex history of certain locations while remembering that Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is now a place primarily associated with Bavarian hospitality and cultural experiences.

Today, Hofbrauhaus is the largest and most crowded beer hall in Munich. While the majority of customers are tourists, we did see some locals as well. In Bavaria “regular’s tables” are a tradition and Hofbrauhaus has more than 100 active groups of regulars, with their oldest regular’s table being held for 70 years.

One old nice man who I met here has reserved table and he use to go here every Friday during 40 year. yet tourists happily sip their beers under ceiling swastikas that have been carefully painted and disguised as Bavarian flags. It's renowned for its beer, particularly the Hofbräu Original, a Munich lager, and other traditional Bavarian beer varieties. The beer is often served in large one-liter mugs called "Maß."

The Hofbräuhaus offers a lively and traditional Bavarian atmosphere. It's known for its large, communal beer halls where visitors can enjoy their beer and food while being entertained by live traditional music. The menu typically features traditional Bavarian dishes such as sausages, schnitzel, pretzels, and sauerkraut.

The staff were dressed in traditional Bavarian clothing, adding to the authenticity of my experience. Like other Hofbräuhaus locations, Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is famous for serving Hofbräu beer, including the Hofbräu Original lager and other traditional Bavarian beer varieties. The beer hall offers a traditional Bavarian atmosphere, with large communal tables, lively music, and an ambiance that celebrates the region's culture and heritage.

Live traditional music, often featuring oompah bands, adds to the festive and enjoyable atmosphere. Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is also known for hosting events and celebrations, especially during Oktoberfest, when it's a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
