Lots of Norwegians celebrate Easter by skiing in the mountains. Skiing among foreign tourists is also popular in the Easter in Norway. For Norwegians Easter holidays means snow, sun and fun!

This Easter in Norway was fantastic most of the time from 19 – 24 March 2008, especially on Kvamsfjellet in Gudbrandsdalen near Rondane National Park. The Easter was early in the year, and the mountains were full of snow.

In the sunny weather people enjoyed skiing on prepared double trails, down hill skiing, sliding on snow racers, ice fishing, and barbeque parties.

Kvamsfjellet is located in Gudbrandsdalen, circa 4 hours drive from the Norwegian capital Oslo. It’s one of Norway’s most beautiful mountain regions, and it’s the gate to Rondane National Park.

It`s a great pleasure for people to leave the stressful days for a while, and go skiing in the winter wonderland at Kvamsfjellet. Here they can relax and enjoy the silence in peaceful surroundings.
Kvamsfjellet is together with Høvringen, Mysuseter, Raphamn, and Venabygdsfjellet, a part of a network of marked routes to Rondane National Park.

The amazing landscapes of Rondane have inspired many Norwegian writers. Probably the best-known work is Peer Gynt (1867), a play by the world famous author Henrik Ibsen, which is partly set in Rondane:

The sunset in the Easter at Kvamsfjellet created a fairytale atmosphere.

Due to Ibsen’s drama about Peer Gynt, Rondane has been strongly associated with the beautiful nature in Norway.
Rondane National Park is the oldest national park in Norway. It was established 21 December 1962. The park contains ten peaks above 2,000 metres (6,560 ft). The tallest peak is Rondeslottet, called The Rondane Castle in English, which is 2,178 m (7,146 ft) high. In the park there are herds of wild reindeer.
The mountains are divided by marked valleys through the landscape; the deepest valley is filled by Rondvatnet, a narrow lake filling the steep space between the large Storronden-Rondeslottet part and Smiubelgen ("The Forge").
In many parts of the park, there are spread-out holes (kettle holes) created by small remains of ice age glaciers, and peculiar small hills called "eskers" made by ground moraine released by melting glaciers.
It’s so nice to celebrate Easter in Peer Gynt`s Kingdom. For many people there is a long tradition, and I am sure they will be back next Easter too!
