Admiring the sunset in one of the world`s most amazing landscapes - Wadi Rum in Jordan

2005-09-02
Between weird and beautiful lunar rock formations, I could admire the sunset in one of the world`s most amazing landscapes (July 2005).

The colours on the rock around me shifted continueosly. It was definitely no neon lights as it is in Las Vegas, but mother nature`s own wonder that showed its best side.

One of the most impressig rock formations is called Noah`s Ark. Was it such Noah`s ship looked when he and his people set sail around 4300 years ago as told about in the Bible. I really wondered how Lawrence of Arabia felt it when he stayed here for a long time preparing the famous attack in Aqaba. Wadi Rum has a long tradition for ancient caravan passageway. Today there are Bedouins living in the area. The best times to enjoy Wadi Rum are early morning and late afternoon, and especially at sunset and night when the desert sky dazzle you.

The desert of Wadi Rum is known as the "Valley of the Moon". It lies in the southern part of Jordan. Around 80 % of the country`s landarea is covered by desert.

In Wadi Rum there are traces of ancient civilizations. It has been found several carved inscriptions in the area from pictographs to Thamudic, Nabatean and Arabic texts.

As I see it, the most amazing monuments in Wadi Rum, are those carved by the nature itself as the natural rock bridges, the up rising rose-colored sand dunes and high peaks.

It has been described by Lawrence of Arabia as "vast, echoing and God-like", and I can understand why.

As written in the book "Wadi RUM - the Desert of the Bedouin", there are two great monuments that stand out: "Petra and Wadi Rum. One is man-made, and the other is God-made".

It`s was so fascinating walking around looking at the weird rock formations. With using my fantasy and looking at them from different angels, I could associate them with many things. The surrealist sculptor, who still works hard, is the wind, but of course the formations have also been designed by erosion.

The sunset in the moon-looking landscape was something for itself. Combined with totally silence it was a stunning beauty experience.

It also possible for climbers to reach up to 1,750 meters on sheer granite and sandstone cliffs.

Staying calm in the night under the stars in a Bedouin tent, is something travellers shouldn`t miss.

In the background you can see the building in Wadi Rum, which was used in the movie about Lawrence of Arabia.

I was so impressed how the Bedouins could navigate around in the desert landscape. It was like the knew every cliff and stone. I wouldn`t have a chance to find my way back here. In the beginning when I first entered the area it all looked almost the same, and I got totally confused. Actually it`s not my first desert tour, but since the area was so large, I was glad to have some local guides with me.

Did Noah`s ship look like this when he and his people set sail on the Ark around 4300 years ago? See the photo below.

This is one of the most amazing rock formations in Wadi Rum.

Other weird rock formations are the Brigdes.

Perfect place for cooling down in the shadow.

Also the wild life in Wadi Rum is impressing. Look up for Gray Wolf, Blandford's Fox, the Sand Cat and the Ibex within the area.  For they who like bird watching it`s recorded 110 species here.

Enjoying this wonder of nature was something I never forget.....
