Photo. Skopje fortress Kale on the city`s highest point - a strategic location.
The fortress Kale dominates the skyline of Skopje. It`s possible to view it from almost every place in the city. We took an easy walk up from the Čaršija and from the fortress ramparts we got great view over the city, river and the surroundings. The entrance is up the hill on Samoilova inside a beautiful park.
Assumed to been built in the 6th century AD, Skopje's fortress Kale is the city`s most famous symbol. The fortress is located on a top of a hill on the northern side of the Vardar River, offering a spectacular view over city and beautiful surroundings. The fortress used the high hill as its main protector. The fortress was partially destroyed yet again by an earthquake in 1963 but was not reconstructed until recently. On the top of the hill, Skopje's fortress has kept an watchful eye for centuries.
Inside the ruins, two mini museums were being built at the time for preserving various archaeological finds from neolithic to Ottoman times.
I really wonder how many stories filled with dramatic, sorrow and joy lie buried beneath the ruined structures, and how dramatic events have changed the course of history.
