Taivalkoski, Finland - Midnight sun admired from deep in the forest

2017-09-03

Enjoyed cottage life in Taivalkoski, in northern Finland. The cottage is an institution in the country. In the holiday seasons, Finns flock to the countryside for quietness and relaxation at cosy hideouts. At a cottage situated by a lake deep in the forest, I took my time to enjoy the midnight sun, silence, sauna, swimming and fishing - just as the Finns use to do.

Watch the photo album on our Facebook page.

Cottages are an essential element in Finnish life that provide a physical and mental escape from the daily stress and worries. The untouched nature here really heals your body and soul, and gives inspirations for life.

The Midnight Sun, the nightless night or polar day – can be seen in the northern Finland from early June until early July, and nights are white throughout the summer.

In Finland, these two months, the Midnight Sun is at its strongest, but the further north you go, the longer the sun stays above the horizon. In the very northernmost parts you can experience a full midnight sun from May to August.

When nights are almost as light as day it is possible to do all the same things that you would do during the day – the biggest difference comes from the incredible change in the nature of the light. The sun takes on a reddish-yellow color – almost like during sunrise or sunset – and everything around you is bathed in an unimaginably warm, bright light.
